Why do they put audience laughter in TV shows?
Ever watch a show, and notice people in the background laughing? What is the purpose behind this?
To make the show seem a lot funnier then it really is most of the time. There are other reasons like to make you know when to react or to keep you paying attention. I don't like that at all though especially when they make it seem like something is really funny so they make the recording last longer, this happens a lot in sitcoms. I think that laughter should be earned so if I hear laughter in a sketch show which is taped live like SNL then I would not condone it.
It's the crowd effect: when one person hears others start to laugh, they are more likely to laugh themselves. They can sometimes do so on the absolute lamest jokes in an attempt to make it seem funnier. Human minds are simple and tend to follow that of a crowd..
You can see for yourself: listen to a comedian's audiobook that has no laugh track (like Lewis Black's "Nothing's Sacred"), then listen to either "Black on Broadway" or "Red White and Screwed". They have similar jokes but you will more likely laugh at the routines with a crowd than the audio book.

Pacing. From the early days of live TV and into the present day with shows taped before a live audience they leave in the laughter. The theory is, the audience at home is also laughing and might miss the next line of dialog if it weren't for that pause for audience reaction. Notice that the actors almost always pause or use any means to delay picking up the dialog if the audience is laughing.
I think its just to let people know that the particular moment in the programme was funny, just incase they didn't get it i guess.
Personally i find it annoying, because once you like notice it, you can't block it out :/.

So dumb people can know when a joke has been told or something funny has just happened.
So you know when to laugh when there is a joke.
when you hear other people laugh...it makes you want to laugh with them...
to **** people off
to know which parts of the show is suppose to be funny
