Why do sitcoms insist on using canned laughter?
Is it because the producers think viewers are so stupid they won't know when to laugh otherwise?
i get what you are saying bud. i was never happier when the likes of the office came out and scrubs it was a breath of fresh air. i was watching an episode of the big bang theory and all he was doing was opening his wallet and there was laughter i was like what the hell is funny about that. sitcoms are actually getting less and less frequant i think 10 years ago tv was flooded with them but with success scrubs brought we are seeing more of the same likeness come to our tv screens such as 30 rock, community, cougar town, and entourage. you should check out blue mountain state and modern family also.

Well if your viewing as a group, and someone else laughs, if you don't laugh, it looks like you don't get the joke, then you look stupid.
LMAO! This is a good question. I'm thinking its something along those lines. In case you dont get that it was supposed to be funny they play that so you know you were supposed to laugh. ;-)
I think that's it in part. People do tend to follow the crowd and if the "crowd" laughs then people are more likely to just because everyone else does it.
The other reason it that it would probably look bad if they did something that was supposed to be really funny - and nobody laughed.

When you see someone smile you usually smile
When you see someone yawn you usually yawn
They just put the laughter in because it makes the person laugh more often and feel as though they can relate to other viewers watching it

Yep, I think so.
The so-called "funny lines" really aren't very funny, so they have to put in canned laughter to let us know that those are supposed to be the jokes.

it's part of a media package. if you were in a theatre for example you would expect applause at stages during plays. since applauding isn't appropriate and we expect to hear laughter . they are both supplying it to try and enable more enjoyment ( as if part of an audience) and supply a background that make it feel more like it is both funny and many are enjoying it. try watching a comedy without background . or a film without music. play without applause etc. not so enjoyable . you rae correct however in that their is far too much canned laughter and once we make a note of it , we no longer enjoy the situation as we feel we are being guided or used.
You do not get much noise out of canned peas.
nobody will laugh otherwise...and ya people are stupid :P but if a sitcom isn't funny it'll kinda make it seem like it's funny like oh people are laughing, it must be funny :P
IDK!!! people are weird like that!!! LOL!!!!
HOPE THIS HELPS :)))

Not all of them use canned laughter, some are still shot in front of a live audience. The advantage of using the canned laughter, even though it is horrid, is that it is predictable. Laughter and comments from a live audience cannot always be controlled.
Its called a laugh track, and it is a cue to let people know when to laugh. Shows from the 70s such as "All in the Family" had a live audience, and the laughter was real.
