Is "inappropriate laughter" really a sign of "serious mental disorders"?
and when could laughter ever truly be in appropriate?

When you find out someone you know is dead? Any really stressful situation would often be seen as an inappropriate time but I reckon it's just a way to keep from breaking down altogether.
Laughing while witnessing a murder, I think would be a sign of mental disorder. It suggests that the person laughing is enjoying it.

You know I laugh when people I don't really know cry like a co-worker or an acquaintance. It's the reason why I don't do funerals or memorial services. I know that's so jacked, seriously I don't mean to but I can't help it. I belong to a support group called "I have a tendency to laugh at inappropriate times". There are 62,895 members so you are not alone.

I've seen it in my own twin brother. He's been smoking cannabis and stuff he finds lying on the street. He doesn't even know what he's been smoking!
Before the drugs -
He laughs at something and you know that there is some kind of funny situation, incident or observation, etc.
After the drugs -
He laughs at just about anything and usually there's barely anything happening.
I've spent years being conditioned into thinking that when someone laughs its because there is something funny or amusing happening. With my twin brother I have to FORCE myself not to show an interest in what he's laughing at because I know that he's either laughing at something that isn't funny or he isn't really laughing at anything, he's just laughing! I have to FORCE myself NOT to have that instinctive curiosity about what is so funny. Sometimes you can even ask him what's so funny and he says "aww nothing".
You can't make too many assumptions about his mood either. Just because he's laughing one minute does not mean he might snap and explode the next.
I've also experienced incidents where people will making a cutting, vicious remark about you and try to make it seem like a kind of joke! Their laughter or giggles are not very convincing either. Its like they are TRYING TO CONVINCE THEMSELVES that they are not being nasty, when deep down inside they know that they are. Whether or not that could be considered a mental disorder I don't know.
There is also the question of whether it is genuine laughter, or more of a verbalised, deliberate affectation?!?

I'm right in that boat with you. I laugh at all the wrong times, and make the worst jokes to try and lighten the mood.

I don't really see how laughter can be innappropriate. If something is funny, you laugh. There can never be too much laughter in the World. No subject should ever be so exalted, that it is immune from Jokes.

Laughter is the most honest release of emotion and stress. People laugh when they're nervous or uncomfortable, as well as when they're happy or amused.

Inappropriate laughter does not imply a mental disorder, it's more a sign of insensitivity and immaturity.
Sometimes laughter is the only appropriate response!
